2011 Tree Planting at Teton Valley Schools
IC 21 is gearing up for its spring/summer 2011 season. IC 21 received an extension from 1% for the Tetons to fulfill its goal of planting 350 trees in the Teton Valley. We will be planting trees at Alta Elementary School, Driggs High School, Journeys at Teton Science Schools, Red Top Meadows, Teton Valley Community School, and Wilson Elementary and in the Green Knoll Fire site on National Forest land.

Mountain Pine Beetle in the Rockies
By the year 2013, it is predicted that “most mature lodgepole pine forests in the American Rockies will be dead,” reports the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. As more pine needles turn red, a sign they're dead, the enormous rust-colored swaths left behind indicate the widening impact on tourism, recreation, scenery, logging, watersheds, wildlife and habitat. Josh King set out in May 2009 to photograph the beetle infestation in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Josh's exhibit was displayed at the Teton County Library in July 2010.
April 30/May 1, 2010--Tree Planting at Victor and Alta Elementary Schools
De
spite the rain and snow, over 300 students, teachers, parents and volunteers came together to learn about the importance of planting trees and helped to plant 20 aspen, chokecherry, cottonwood, and spruce trees at the Victor and Alta Elementary Schools on Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1. IC 21 partnered with the Alta and Victor Elementary Schools, the City of Victor, Envision Victor, Friends of the Teton River and the Ponds for this project.
Thank you to all who joined IC 21 at the Eco Fair Saturday April 24. We appreciate the generosity of everyone who contributed to our tree planting project and those who signed up to help plant trees this spring, summer and fall.
Currently, IC 21 is collaborating with the City of Victor, Teton Basin Ice and Recreation, Friends of the Teton River, Victor Transit Center, Victor and Alta Elementary Schools, and Red Top Meadows to plant an additonal 135 trees by this coming fall.
Out of the 350 trees IC 21 has committed to plant by Oct 24, 2010, 96 trees have gone in the ground to date! In addition to the plantings discussed above, the happy recipients of the first round of trees in fall '09 were: Davey Jackson Elementary, C-V Ranch, Journeys School and Summit High School. Oct. 24th 2009--IC 21's Tree Planting Ceremony and Celebration of 350.org's International Day of Climate Action
Despite drab, slushy weather, between 75-100 students and community members gathered for the launch of IC 21's tree planting project on Oct. 24, 2009. Jackson Mayor Mark Baron (featured in the photo below) was among them. The festivities included a medley of songs performed by some 50 local elementary school students-including "We're Going to Fight, Fight, Fight for the Environment" and "Every Day is Earth Day"--and informative speeches by Teton County Commissioner Andy Schwartz and Public Lands Director for the Winter Wildlands Alliance, Forrest McCarthy. Jonathan Schechter from 1% for the Tetons can be found planting a tree below.
Journeys Students
Over 30 Journeys School elementary students came together to learn about carbon sequestration and to plant trees on Oct. 23, 2009.
C-V Ranch
Students from C-V Ranch, an alternative school in Wilson, WY, were excited to get out fo the classroom and plant some trees. The entire school joined in on tree planting and learning activities.
