School Building Program in Sierra Leone

Girls in Sembehun

Jackson Hole community members showed big hearts and dedication to global issues in August 2009 during IC 21's Educating for a Better World Program--contributing over $80,000 to build two schools in Sierra Leone! Locals flocked to several events to hear Ishmael Beah--best-selling author of A Long Way Gone; Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. Mr. Beah talked about his experiences and why he believes in educating for a better world. He was joined by board members from the Seattle-based non-profit Schools for Salone (or SfS). Schools for Salone is dedicated to building schools for communities in the wake of Sierra Leone's civil war.

These events marked the beginning of an on-going relationship between the two villages where the schools are being built in Sierra Leone  (Kpakuma and Sembehun) and Jackson, WY. Schools for Salone is overseeing construction of the schools. IC 21 is working to establish twinning opportunities between Kpakuma and Sembehun,  Sierra Leone, and the Jackson community.
