World Heritage and Curriculum Themes

Angkor, Cambodia © UNESCO, F. Bandarin

Over 800 cultural and natural sites of outstanding universal significance from around the world have been designated as World Heritage sites by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee. Examples of World Heritage sites include Venice and its lagoons, the Galapagos Islands, Yellowstone National Park and the Pyramids of Egypt.

To help teachers incorporate World Heritage Education into their existing curricula, InterConnections 21 has created a World Heritage Themes webpage that classifies these sites by curriculum themes. More information about World Heritage can also be found at http://whc.unesco.org/.

UN Day Celebration at Jackson Hole High School, WYUN and World AIDS Day Lesson Plans

The United Nations has designated special days throughout the year to focus on particular world concerns. Unlike widely celebrated national or religious holidays, these days commemorate human rights issues that affect citizens of all nations, and can serve to raise awareness of their global impact.

InterConnections 21 has created interdisciplinary units on United Nations Day (October 24th) and World AIDS Day (December 1st), which can be can be carried out in Social Studies classes, or by Social Studies teachers in collaboration with teachers of Mathematics, Language Arts, and Visual Arts. Teachers may reproduce these materials for use in their classrooms. For permission to use these materials for publication or any other purpose, contact us.
