It has been predicted that as many as 150 million people may be forced from their homes due to rising sea levels and climate change. IC 21 sponsored 6 students from WY to participate in the 13th Annual Student Conference on Human Rights in New York City. The students convened with over 300 students from around the globe to develop concrete recommendations for projects and programs to raise awareness about and act on the issues associated with the conference's six sub-themes. Around 135 students from across WY and ID participated in TCMUN 2010. Jackson Hole HS senior Sarah Ross served as Secretary General and for the first time ever, 5 students from Jackson's high schools served as committee co-chairs. IC 21 continues to collaborate with Teton Valley communities to work towards its goal of planting 350 trees in the Teton Valley. During spring and summer 2010, 21 trees were planted at Victor, ID and Alta, WY elementary schools, and 15 trees were planted at Red Top Meadows, near Jackson. IC 21 also participated in Jackson's annual Eco Fair where brochures about bark beetle infestation and water conservation were distributed. In February 2010, dedication ceremonies took place in Kpakuma and Sembehun, Sierra Leone to celebrate the opening of two Jackson-funded schools. Click here to read more.

On October 24 of 2009, IC 21 launched a year-long tree planting project to plant 350 trees in and around the Tetons. This kick-off event took place at Davey Jackson Elementary, Jackson, and marked Jackson's celebration of 350.org's International Day of Climate Action. IC 21 will work with a host of partners (including schools, local governments and other organizations) to find homes for the 350 trees on public use land. IC 21's tree-planting program has been made possible through generous support from 1% for the Tetons.

In August of 2009, Ishmael Beah--former child soldier and best selling author of A Long Way Gone presented, followed by a discussion by board members from Schools for Salone (SfS), a Seattle based not-for-profit dedicated to rebuilding schools in post-war Sierra Leone.

Ms. Tinsley spoke in Jackson during early March of 2009 about "Preventing Genocide: Personal Reflections from Rwanda, Congo and Darfur."

University of Wyoming Professors, Marianne Kamp and Jean Garrison, spoke to high school students about the Current Situation in the Middle East and US Foreign Policy, respectively during February of 2009.
On December 3-5 of 2008, the 11th Annual UN Student Conference on Human Rights took place at the UN International School and UN headquarters in New York City. During this IC 21 co-sponsored conference, students were challenged to think about human rights issues in a time of climate change. In addition, students dealt with topics about forced migration and poverty.

Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations system where students represent diplomats from countries around the world. Check out our Teton County Model UN page to learn more! This event took place at the Teton Science School on November 18-19, 2008.
In September 2008, IC 21 and the Center of Wonder co-sponsored a performance by the Eagle Spirit Dancers at the Center for the Arts in Jackson. The dancers traveled from the Wind River Reservation in central WY to share their culture of telling stories of a hunt or battle through complex movements and ceremonial dress.

A presentation took place in September by Geoff O'Gara (author of "What You See in Clear Water," a book about the dispute over water rights in the Wind River Range) and James Trosper (Sun Dance chief of the Eastern Shoshone tribe and direct descendant of Chief Washakie). Mr. O'Gara and Mr. Trosper discussed the history of the Wind River Reservation and current issues facing the reservation today. This event was co-organized by IC 21 and the Teton County Library Foundation.

In August 2008, IC 21, the Center of Wonder, and Paul and Tatiana Maxwell welcomed Rory Stewart (author of "The Places In Between" and "The Prince of the Marshes: And Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq") to speak in Jackson. See the Winter 2009 Newsletter for the full story.
Sponsored by IC 21, Professor Karen Ruth Adams* from U of MT facilitated a model UN workshop at the Jackson Hole Community School in August 2008.
In April of 2008, a public presentation was held by Greg Mortenson. IC 21 also organized presentations at Jackson Hole High School and Jackson Elementary that reached over 900 local students from local schools.
