Ishmael Beah's Aug. 2009 Trip to Jackson

 

Ishmael Beah Reaches out to the Jackson CommunityDuring Ishmael Beah's August 2009 trip to Jackson Hole, he made efforts to reach out to students of all ages. IC 21 sponsored fun-filled events throughout the week during which Ishmael Beah shared his life story with students and community members and shared his beliefs about the importance of education in addressing global issues. The JHMS Pieces of Peace Club Sierra Leonean Cooking Class

Ishmael Beah teamed up with Jackson local, Mary Woollen, to teach middle school students from the Pieces of Peace Club how to cook Sierra Leonean food. The class was sponsored by Jim Rooks, Michelle Rooks and IC 21.

High School Hike

Local high school students enjoyed a hike to Ski Lake with Ishmael Beah and the board members of Schools for Salone. While on the hike, students learned about the Peace Corps and other opportunities to get involved in global issues.

Educating for a Better World

Community members flocked to the IC 21 sponsored "Educating for a Better World" event at the Center for the Arts on Aug. 6th, 2009. Ishmael Beah was joined by board members of the Seattle-based non-profit Schools for Salone who talked about their dedication to rebuilding schools in the wake of the country's terrible eleven-year civil war.

Ishmael's Impact on the Community

Ishmael's Jackson visit impacted inumerable students and community members. Jackson Mayor Mark Baron was inspired to purchase a puppy during the Educating for a Better World presentation--the proceeds of which went to the IC 21/SfS School Building Project in Sierra Leone.
