A Path Appears

Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity

“Hope is like a path in the countryside. Originally, there is nothing – but as people walk this way again and again, a path appears.”—Lu Xun, Chinese essayist, 1921

IC 21 is partnering with Raising Girls to host an excerpt screening and parent-daughter discussion of the documentary A Path Appears. From the team that wrote Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, A Path Appears follows intrepid reporters Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn and actor/advocates Malin Akerman, Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow, Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Ashley Judd, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria and Alfre Woodard around the world as they uncover the harshest forms of gender-based oppression and human rights violations, as well as the effective solutions being implemented to combat them.

Facilitated group discussion will complement the film excerpts.

Logistics idea for parents: take your lunch hour at the end of the work day, and have your daughter ride the school bus to the library. Rendezvous at 4pm!

This event’s intended audience is parents (or caregivers) and daughters. Because of the mature themes addressed in A Path Appears, including sex trafficking and domestic violence, parental discretion is advised. The film and discussion content may not be appropriate for girls younger than high school.

A Path Appears is also a highly acclaimed book. Participants are encouraged to read it, before or after this gathering. Copies will be available at the event.

IC21 looks forward to hosting a community presentation by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn on June 29 at the Center for the Arts. Find more info about their lecture here.
