Greg Mortenson's journey, as related by the New Times Best-seller "Three Cups of Tea," began with a failed attempt to climb K2 in 1993. Through a wild and unexpected turn of events this experience lead him to his mission of building schools for communities in the mountainous regions in Afghanistan and Pakistan and co-founding the Central Asia Institute (CAI) with Dr. Jean Hoerni. To date, CAI has built and supported over 58 schools, supports more than 520 teachers, and has begun work with health, hygiene and sanitation projects including water filtration and purification, building latrines and providing patients with cataract eye surgeries.
"Three Cups of Tea," according to Tom Brokaw, "is not only a thrilling read, it's proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world."
